Leave rights when you change jobs mid-year

Resigning in May feels different from resigning in November — not only emotionally, but mathematically. Leave entitlement in Germany is often calculated with the calendar year in mind, and mid-year exits rearrange who owes what.
Ask for the leave certificate
A written statement of leave already granted in the current year helps your next employer set the remaining balance correctly. Request it during offboarding; chasing it later is harder.
Pro-rata is not folklore
Many contracts and statutes use fractional entitlement when employment covers only part of the year. Use the worksheet from our Leave Carry-Over module rather than a mental estimate. Rounding rules in your agreement matter.
Myths to retire
“Unused days always vanish on the last working day” is too blunt. Timing of the resignation, waiting periods, and whether leave was refused earlier can change the picture. Employment consultations exist precisely because these facts combine differently case by case.
