Rest time

Eleven hours between shifts — and when it shortens

Clock symbolizing rest between work shifts

Daily rest is easy to describe and easy to break. The classic eleven-hour window measures from the end of one duty period to the start of the next. Travel between sites, late handovers, and “just answer this call” moments can quietly shrink it.

The pairing method

Write each shift’s end time on the left and the next start on the right. Subtract. Highlight anything under eleven hours. Do this for a full published rota before complaining — patterns persuade better than a single anecdote.

When rest shortens

Certain sectors and emergency situations allow temporary reductions, often with compensatory rest afterward. Collective agreements may refine the details. The educational point is not to memorize every exception; it is to notice when your workplace is treating the exception as the default.

On-call overlays

On-call can change how rest is calculated depending on how disruptive the standby is. If you are woken repeatedly, treat that week as a candidate for a Rest Period Mapping session in our lab or Intensive — bring the call log.
